D and I are big fans of Mexican food.
LaFonda is sorely missed here, and I can’t speak for D but even places like Taco Bell and Del Taco are missed.
We were quick to check out the local food scene and Mexican food was some of the first we tried. So far we haven’t had anything that was terrible but we still haven’t found our home. There is one place that we intend to try that is said to be the best hands down. We will be the judges of that…
Anyways…
First we went to a place called Mi Casa. It was a restaurant that seemed to have a little taste of all cultures. We tried this out of our own curiosity, not having received any suggestions or recommendations for it. It was good, but it missed the spice I was so desperately looking for. I had a green Chile casserole sort of dish and D had chicken Enchiladas. D seemed less impressed with his enchiladas then I was with my green chili. But like I said there was just something missing.
Next we tried El Sombrero. This is where we were recommended to go by a few people and they said it was the best mexican they have ever had. The one thing that threw us both off and made us very wary of this place was a warning on the front of the menu that stated; Enchilada sauce contains peanut butter. SAY WHAT?! I was both intrigued and worried at the same time. Overall, it was good, not the best we’ve ever had, but at this point the closest to the best. On our trip there a very kind gentleman took care of our meal which was completely unexpected and just so kind. We did find it a little odd that a staple where we are from endless chips and salsa was not the case here. You were given a free basket and then charged quite a lot for the next basket. All I can say to that was it opened our eyes how much both of us enjoy chips and salsa. I guess I am just going to have to keep making it myself for us to get our fix. D tried the chicken enchiladas, again, and he says I always order the same thing, and I tried their super burrito. D let me taste his enchiladas and I thought they were good, again not like home but good. My burrito was huge and I thought pretty tasty. To answer your question about the enchilada sauce… I couldn’t figure out where they put the peanut butter, nor did I taste peanut butter, and trust me I was looking for it.
The next place we tried was La Taqueria. Sounds legit right? I had read on Yelp that they had street style tacos and they were really good. This place is new to town and boy I hope they stay. While it’s still not 100% home it is really good food! We have tried a few of their tacos and have enjoyed their chips salsa and guac. We have been here three times now, and if I have my way we will be back often.
The last place we will try is the restaurant that has been highly recommended to us since we’ve been here. Lets hope its as good as they say or else if we want anything but tacos it’s all on my shoulders…thats really intimidating given the limited spicy and mexican ingredients we have here.
