As mentioned before I was already not eating gluten, dairy, and limited sugar before we started this Whole30. The Sunday before we started I gave in and shared a pizza with D and then ate BB’s mac and cheese with her. The following two days I was SO grumpy. I couldn’t even fake nice. I just needed to be alone and not have to talk to anyone, unfortunately when you’re a mom and you’re married that is a little tough! Thank goodness I have an amazing husband who didn’t take my nastiness personally! He got the most of it. 😦
Wednesday we officially started our Whole 30. I’ll give you a quick overview of how we were supposed to feel and then how we actually felt or at least me and what I observed in D. Day 1: Optimistic, Day 2-3: Hungover, head aches, tired, general yuck, Day 4-5: So so grumpy, Day 6-7: Sleep all the time. How we actually felt…
Day 1: I felt amazing, I was back to eating what made my body feel better and was feeling so much better. I was in my head about everything though trying to make sure I mixed things up enough and made things as normal as possible for D so that this wasn’t as hard on him. We both were doing good this day.
Day 2-3: I had a cold and got a little head ache but nothing huge. D said he felt just fine and we both made it through with little to no hang over.
Day 4-5: I felt just a little less patient and D seemed pretty normal maybe feeling a little less patient as well but overall we were both very pleasant and possibly even more nice and loving to each other. However, we learned that weekends were going to be hard on us. We used to go out at least once on the weekends as a treat to me to not have to cook or clean and to change things up. Well with all the restrictions we decided at least this weekend to stay in. BUT we don’t stay in well so while looking for things to do it felt like everything had a catch. We wanted to take BB to a movie but we would have to sit there, watch her enjoy the popcorn and drink water… not as fun.
Day 6-7: I can’t speak for D here but I felt a bit run down, especially seeing now that I am on the other side of this I was moving a bit slower than normal. Nothing so drastic that I was like oh my gosh I can’t do this anymore
Overall: We escaped with minimal damage, no hangover phase, no grumpy phase, nothing really significant. This does make me wonder if I am doing everything wrong, but I have looked over everything and we are following all the rules. Maybe we just lucked out! I wont lie I am surprised that D didn’t have more noticeable detox symptoms, and not because he does anything wrong just simply because I already worked a lot of the things out of my system.
So part of the Whole30 is to heal your relationship with food and to help you develop a healthier one. No sweets, no indulging after meals, limited snacking. While we hope to benefit from these changes neither of us were going into this because we felt that we had an unhealthy relationship with food. D is the most anti sweet person I know, and while I always and only want sweets thanks to his influence and resistance I have drastically cut back. Additionally, to my knowledge we don’t have any food related habits (snack at 3, or candy bar every day at 8 p.m.), therefore, this wasn’t something I was really focused on. We ate if we were hungry which I felt at the beginning was all the time, and we just made sure we made good choices when we did eat.
While we didn’t have anything we were specifically working on I have learned so much about myself, the way I think, and things that I really should try to put some focus on while we are doing this. I will talk about those later probably! Until then, I’ve decided eating this was makes food look so much better! So I thought I would share some of our meals!
Burgers with avocado, fries, and broccoli.
Rockfish, mashed potatoes, and green beans (they didn’t make it to the plate I ate them all)
Breakfast: Eggs, fajita veggies, avocado, and berries
Steak and veggies… yumÂ
Taco chicken, salsa, berries, and apples
Sweet potato and chicken sausage. This is basically what I eat for lunch most days usually with green beans.
Eggs, salsa, chicken sausage, and berries

Steak and eggs that D made us… I am set if the Whole30 has D making me breakfast as a surprise!
